India's Hidden Himalayan Kingdom
Glacial lakes that mirror the sky, ancient monasteries cloaked in prayer flags, the world's third-highest peak at dawn, and valleys carpeted in rhododendrons — Sikkim's soul in seven unforgettable days.
Six extraordinary experiences that make Sikkim unlike anywhere else in the Indian Himalayas.
The sacred Tsomgo Lake (3,753 m) — frozen in winter, turquoise in summer — sits cradled between steep mountain walls. Beyond it, the historic Nathula Pass (4,310 m) marks the old Silk Road crossing into Tibet, now an Indo-China border post.
Wake before dawn in Pelling for the most dramatic mountain sunrise in Sikkim — the world's third-highest peak (8,586 m) flushing gold, then crimson, then white as daylight breaks. The Singshore Bridge and Pemayangtse Monastery complete the West Sikkim circuit.
The Valley of Flowers of Sikkim (3,564 m) — a 24-rhododendron-species spectacle every April. Soak in the Shingba natural hot sulphur springs beside the Teesta river. Beyond Yumthang, Zero Point (4,428 m) offers permanent snow against a backdrop of Himalayan silence.
Sikkim holds over 200 monasteries. Visit Rumtek — seat of the Kagyu lineage; Pemayangtse — one of Sikkim's oldest monasteries with a stunning 7-tiered woodwork depicting Guru Rinpoche's heavenly palace; Tashiding and the compact Namchi complex with its 108-foot Guru Rinpoche statue.
Ride the Gangtok Ropeway for aerial views of the capital and the Himalayan ranges beyond. Stroll car-free MG Marg — Gangtok's pedestrian promenade lined with restaurants, shops and flower beds. The Enchey Monastery and Do-Drul Chorten stupa round off the city highlights.
The colossal 130-foot seated Buddha statue at Rabong (Ravangla) — completed in 2013 to mark Buddha's 2,550th birth anniversary — peers out over forested ridges and Kanchenjunga in the distance. South Sikkim's quiet roads and cardamom-scented forests make for a perfect scenic drive.
A perfectly balanced 7-day journey through East, West and North Sikkim — monasteries, lakes, valleys and summits.
Your RJ Holidays driver meets you at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station and begins the 3.5–4 hour scenic transfer to Gangtok (1,650 m), Sikkim's capital. The drive follows the Teesta river, one of the most beautiful and powerful rivers in the Eastern Himalayas, through lush subtropical forests gradually giving way to cool Himalayan air. Check in to your Gangtok hotel. Evening walk on the famous car-free MG Marg — flower-lined, café-dotted and buzzing with local life. Dinner at a restaurant serving traditional Sikkimese thukpa (noodle soup) or momos. Early night to acclimatise.
Early morning departure (permits collected by us) for Tsomgo Lake (3,753 m) — a glacial lake sacred to the Sikkimese, believed to predict the future by the colour of its waters. En route, pass through dense rhododendron and magnolia forests. At Tsomgo, take a yak or pony ride around the frozen-in-winter, turquoise-in-summer shoreline. Continue to Nathula Pass (4,310 m) — the historic Indo-China border post on the ancient Silk Road (Indian nationals only). Stand at the actual Line of Actual Control and observe Chinese border infrastructure across the divide. Return via Baba Mandir — a temple dedicated to a legendary Indian soldier whose spirit is said to protect border troops. Descend to Gangtok for dinner.
A full day exploring Gangtok's cultural heart. Morning: visit Rumtek Monastery (24 km from Gangtok) — the seat-in-exile of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, housing priceless golden relics. Return to Gangtok for the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology — a premier research institute on Tibetan culture with a stunning manuscript and art collection. Afternoon: ride the Gangtok Ropeway for aerial panoramas. Visit the Do-Drul Chorten stupa — one of the most important in Sikkim — ringed by 108 prayer wheels. Stroll Flower Show Garden (species unique to Sikkim including the rare blue poppy). Evening at MG Marg for local shopping — Lepcha crafts, handmade paper, silk and cardamom products.
Drive from Gangtok to Pelling (2,150 m) in West Sikkim — a 4–5 hour journey through winding mountain roads, Rabong (Ravangla), and the South Sikkim cardamom belt. En route stop at the Rabong Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal) — the 130-foot seated Buddha statue offering sweeping views over forested Himalayan ridges. Check in to your Pelling hotel, chosen for its direct Kanchenjunga view from the room. Afternoon walk to the ancient Pemayangtse Monastery — one of Sikkim's oldest and most revered gompas, housing Zangdog Palri, a spectacular 7-tiered carved woodwork depicting Guru Rinpoche's heavenly paradise. Sunset views of Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) from the monastery courtyard, weather permitting. Early dinner and rest for the pre-dawn sunrise viewpoint.
Rise before 5 AM for the Pelling sunrise viewpoint — the world's third-highest peak (8,586 m) transitions from charcoal silhouette to gold to brilliant white as dawn breaks over the Sikkim Himalayas. One of the great mountain spectacles of the Eastern Himalayas. Post-breakfast: drive to the Singshore Bridge (2,165 m) — Asia's highest suspension bridge, swaying gently over a 100-metre gorge with misty valleys below. Continue to Khecheopalri Lake — the Wish-Fulfilling Lake, a sacred spot for Buddhists and Hindus alike, where fallen leaves are said to be immediately removed by birds so the surface stays pure. Walk through the prayer-flag-draped forest path to the lakeside shrine. Return to Pelling for dinner.
Drive from Pelling back through Gangtok and north into the Teesta valley toward Lachung (2,900 m) in North Sikkim. The landscape shifts dramatically — subtropical forests climb into alpine meadows, glacial streams cut through boulder fields, and waterfalls tumble down sheer cliff faces. Pass the spectacular Naga Waterfall (Singhik viewpoint) and the Seven Sisters Waterfalls. Arrive Lachung by evening and check in to your mountain lodge. Lachung Village itself is a gem — traditional Sikkimese wooden houses, apple orchards, and snow-streaked peaks on all sides. Dinner of home-cooked Sikkimese food by the fireplace.
Early morning drive to Yumthang Valley (3,564 m) — Sikkim's Valley of Flowers — for the rhododendron spectacle in season or stunning alpine meadows year-round. Soak briefly in the Shingba natural hot sulphur springs beside the river. Continue to Zero Point (4,428 m) — the last accessible point before the China border, with permanent snow, dramatic glacial peaks and Himalayan silence that feels truly like the top of the world. Return to Lachung for a quick lunch, then begin the long drive back to Bagdogra Airport or NJP railway station (approx. 5–6 hours). Your RJ Holidays representative bids you farewell with Sikkim's monastery bells still echoing and the image of Kanchenjunga at dawn burned into memory.
